Proton: the Malay exotic on the automotive market

Founded in 1983, the automobile manufacturer actually bears the name Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional, from whose abbreviation the brand name originated. The main shareholder of the group, which emerged from a cooperation between Mitsubishi and Heavy Industries of Malaysia, is the Malaysian state itself.

Production began in 1985 with some Mitsubishi licensed models, but also with in-house developments such as the Waja, Saga and Exora models. In 1996 Proton also took over Lotus, the British car manufacturer famous for its racing team.
